The newly added LoL Emerald Rank explained

The Emerald League of Legends ranked tier is the newest addition to the LoL ranks system. Riot Games recently released multiple announcements in the form of LoL Dev Blogs, detailing the upcoming changes to the ranked queues in League of Legends. Split 2 will shake things up, especially with League of Legends Emerald rank being included.

New LoL Rank Emerald Added

The ranked LoL system has been facing a lot of issues. Boosting, smurfing and cheap botted accounts have been an issue across all LoL ranks tiers. But right now, Riot Games are focusing on relieving the burden that lower ranks have. Currently, over 60% of the League of Legends player base resides in Bronze or Silver LoL ranks. This leads to an uneven distribution chart and greater variation in game quality. That’s why Riot Games is adding a new Emerald rank League of Legends.

The goal of the addition of this Emerald rank League of Legends ranked system changes is to improve game quality. Riot Games has conducted internal research and has concluded that their League ranks system is different from other popular multiplayer games. Apart from Iron ranks and players above Diamond, most of the ranked LoL players are stuck in 2 ranks, instead of being spread out through 4. This results in longer que times, lower game quality due to uneven teams, and makes the smurfing issue even worse.

LoL Ranked distribution after Emerald rank introduced

This Emerald League of Legends rank will be placed in between the current Platinum and Diamond ranks and should alleviate the clogging in ranks below Gold. According to calculations, half of the currently LoL Bronze ranked players will be in Silver next ranked split. Silver 1 ranked LoL players will jump through Gold entirely and will be placed in low Platinum games. The entire Platinum player base will be placed in Emerald 3 or higher. At the same time, the lower spectrum of Diamond 4 will slide to Emerald 1. Meanwhile, the best Gold players at the moment will be Emerald 4 on the new patch. 

The new League Emerald rank included in the many League of Legends ranked changes won’t affect how ranked rewards are given out. The Gold rank LoL remains the cutoff for receiving Victorious skins, which are now given out twice a year, at the end of each competitive and ranked split. Demotion will also remain Diamond+ so don’t be afraid to test the new waters.
